Working Characteristics of Ladle Refining Furnace
Ladle Refining Furnace ( LRF, LF ) is an important equipment in steel smelting. It is mainly used for secondary refining of molten steel after primary refining in converter or electric furnace to improve the purity of molten steel, adjust the composition and temperature. Its working characteristics are as follows:
Features of Ladle Refining Furnace
1. Diversified functions
Precise composition control: Through alloy fine-tuning, the composition of molten steel (such as C, Si, Mn, etc.) can be accurately adjusted to meet the requirements of different steel grades.
Temperature uniformity: Through arc heating to compensate for temperature drop, ensure uniform temperature of molten steel (usually controlled within ±5℃) to meet continuous casting requirements.
Desulfurization & deoxidation: Through the production of reducing slag (such as CaOAl₂O₃-based slag) and argon blowing and stirring, deep desulfurization (can be reduced to below 0.005%) and deoxidation.
Inclusion removal: Through slag steel reaction and bubble flotation, non-metallic inclusions are removed to improve the cleanliness of molten steel.
2. Process flexibility
Independent operation: can be flexibly combined with converters, electric furnaces or vacuum treatment devices (such as VD, RH) to adapt to different production processes.
Multi-station collaboration: often linked with argon blowing stations, wire feeders, vacuum equipment, etc. to achieve composite refining (such as LFVD process).
3. Efficient heating capacity
Arc heating: three-phase electrode arc heating (usually 1530MVA power), the heating rate can reach 35℃/min, which can quickly compensate for the temperature drop of molten steel.
Energy-saving design: reduce arc radiation heat loss and improve thermal efficiency (up to 60% or more) through foam slag technology.
4. Stirring technology
Bottom blowing argon: introduce argon through permeable bricks or blowing devices to promote molten steel flow, accelerate slag steel reaction and composition homogenization.
Electromagnetic stirring (optional): some high-end equipment is equipped with electromagnetic stirring to avoid argon blowing on refractory materials.
5. Automation & intelligence
Process automation: integrated electrode adjustment, alloy feeding, temperature monitoring and other systems to achieve closed-loop control.
Dynamic model: metallurgical model is used to predict composition and temperature changes and optimize refining cycle (usually 30-60 minutes).
6. High requirements for refractory materials
Lining erosion resistance: The ladle lining needs to withstand high temperature (1600-1700℃), high basicity slag and arc radiation, and magnesium carbon bricks or aluminum-magnesium castables are commonly used.
Life of air-permeable bricks: Bottom argon-blown air-permeable bricks require regular maintenance, and their life is usually 80-120 furnaces.
7. Environmental protection & safety
Dust treatment: equipped with dust removal system (such as bag dust removal) to handle the dust generated by arc heating (dust concentration ≤50mg/m³).
Anti-splash design: reduce molten steel splashing by controlling argon blowing intensity and slag layer thickness.
8. Economical
Low-cost refining: Compared with other refining methods (such as AOD), LF equipment investment and operating costs are lower, suitable for mass production of ordinary steel and high-quality special steel.
Typical Application Scenarios
- High-sulfur steel: Ultra-low sulfur steel (such as pipeline steel) is produced through LRF deep desulfurization.
- Aluminum-killed steel: Control the morphology of Al₂O₃ inclusions.
- Bearing steel/gear steel: Improve cleanliness and composition uniformity.
The ladle refining furnace has significantly improved the quality and production efficiency of steel products through the above characteristics, and has become an indispensable link in modern short-process steelmaking.
