VD VOD Refining Furnace: The Working Principle

 

VD VOD refining furnace all operated in a vacuum environment to improve the quality of steel.

VD furnaces use a five-stage steam jet pump to establish a vacuum environment so that the molten steel can be refined under negative pressure. The refining time is usually about 30 minutes. 

VD refining is mainly to remove gases and impurities such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in the molten steel to prevent air pollution and avoid steel defects.

The working principle of the VOD furnace is similar to that of the VD furnace, but the specific operation may be different. The VOD refining method is to place the primary molten steel in a closed tank and evacuate it, while blowing argon at the bottom of the ladle for stirring.

Vacuum Decarburization, referred to as VD, is a widely used vacuum refining furnace that can effectively reduce the hydrogen and nitrogen content in steel, remove oxygen in steel through carbon-oxygen reaction, and remove sulfur in steel through the full reaction of alkaline slag and molten steel.

The principle of the VD furnaces is to use a five-stage steam jet pump to make the vacuum degree of the vacuum chamber reach below 67Pa, and achieve the refining purpose through the effect of negative pressure. The normal working time of the VD furnace is 30 minutes.

Its equipment includes:

• Vacuum tank,
• Vacuum tank cover and its tank cover lifting and moving trolley
• Vacuum charging device
• Vacuum pump system
• Vacuum pipe system connecting tank and vacuum pump
• Control and monitoring equipment.

VD refining furnaces has simple equipment, less investment, simple operation and relatively low production cost. It is widely used in steel types that are not very demanding, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, ordinary bearing steel, ordinary oil pipeline steel, etc.

Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization, referred to as VOD furnaces, is used for oxygen decarburization and argon stirring under vacuum conditions, mainly producing ultra-low carbon, nitrogen stainless steel and other products.

Its equipment includes:

• Vacuum tank
• Vacuum pump
• Ladle
• Oxygen gun
• Charging system
• Temperature measuring device and end point control instrument, etc.

Compared with VD furnace, VOD refining furnace has very high requirements on the quality of refractory materials. VOD furnace is often combined with electric furnace or converter, and the process usually adopts double connection method. The normal working time of VOD furnaces is about 1 hour.
