What Is a Foundry Ladle Made of?

Cast Ladle

Foundry ladle are mainly used for storing and distributing molten steel in steel , production. It is one of the key equipment to ensure the smooth progress of subsequent casting or rolling processes.

Electric furnace ladles are also suitable for steel smelting production of different scales according to their capacity and type.

The main application scenarios and functions include the following aspects:

  1. Storage of molten steel
  2. Temperature adjustment
  3. Impurity removal
  4. Distribution

Composition Structure of Foundry Ladle

The electric furnace ladle is mainly composed of an outer shell and an inner lining. The outer shell is welded from boiler steel plates, while the inner lining is made of refractory materials. It is mainly made of the following parts:

  • 1. Ladle structure:

As the basic equipment in the refining process, the ladle plays a vital role in metal smelting. The structural design of the cast ladle usually includes key components such as the sliding nozzle mechanism, which need to be accurately installed and debugged to ensure the smooth pouring of molten steel and the safe operation of the ladle.

  • 2. Refractory materials:

Ladle castables: Cast ladles castables are an important component of the ladle lining.

They are mainly made of corundum, alumina-magnesium spinel, fused magnesia sand and other raw materials as aggregates, and some additives are added, and they are made through micro-powder bonding technology.

This castable has good slag resistance, spalling resistance, thermal shock resistance, strength and volume stability, and can resist the erosion of molten iron and slag. It is suitable for casting the wall of large and medium-sized ladles.

Other refractory materials: In addition to castables, cast ladle may also use other refractory materials, such as seat bricks, upper nozzles, etc. These materials also need to have good fire resistance and erosion resistance to ensure the safe operation of the ladle and extend its service life.

  • 3. Other auxiliary materials:

In the manufacturing process of the ladle, some auxiliary materials such as mud, springs, safety pins, etc. are also needed. These materials play an important role in the installation, commissioning and use of the ladle.

In addition, in order to control the flow rate of molten steel and the pouring speed, the ladle is also equipped with a sliding nozzle control system. The sliding nozzle consists of an upper nozzle, an upper slide plate, a lower nozzle and a lower slide plate, and the flow of molten steel is controlled by adjusting the movement of the upper and lower slide plates hydraulically or manually.

In general, the design of the foundry ladle is to ensure its performance and durability under extreme conditions to meet the requirements of modern steel production for high efficiency and high quality.
