What is The Submerged Arc Furnace Used For?
Submerged arc furnace is an industrial furnace mainly used for smelting high-melting-point metals, alloys or chemical raw materials. It is mainly used to reduce and smelt metal ores, extract the metal components in the ores, and form metals.
It mainly produces important products in the metallurgical industry such as ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrochrome, ferrotungsten, and silicon-manganese alloys through chemical reactions under high temperature conditions and using raw materials such as carbonaceous reducing agents and solvents.
Submerged arc furnaces are mainly used to smelt the following substances:
1. Ferroalloys: such as ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrochrome, silicon-manganese alloys, etc., which are the main application areas of submerged arc furnaces.
2. Calcium carbide (calcium carbide): used to produce acetylene gas and other chemical products.
3. Industrial silicon: used to produce organic silicon, polysilicon, etc.
4. Other metals: such as phosphorus, tin, etc.
Smelting Characteristics of Submerged Arc Furnace
1) High temperature operation:
SAF relies on the resistance heat generated by the electric current passing through the charge for smelting, so the temperature in the furnace is very high, which can reach or even exceed 2000℃, meeting the smelting needs of high melting point materials.
2) Reducing atmosphere:
In order to promote the reduction reaction of metal oxides, a reducing atmosphere is usually maintained in the furnace, which is conducive to the smelting process and improves the metal recovery rate.
3) Intermittent or continuous charging:
Depending on the smelting process, the submerged arc furnace can adopt intermittent or continuous charging to ensure the stability and efficiency of the smelting process.
4) Slag treatment:
Slag will be produced during the smelting process, which needs to be treated in time to ensure the smooth progress of the smelting process and the quality of the product.
The composition and properties of the slag also have an important influence on the smelting process.
5) High power consumption:
Submerged arc furnaces is a high-energy-consuming equipment with very high power consumption, so it is usually built in areas with abundant power resources.
6) Strong adaptability:
The SAF melting furnace can adapt to different grades of ore raw materials, and can adapt to different raw material conditions by adjusting the smelting process.
In short, the characteristics of the submerged arc furnace are high temperature, reducing atmosphere, intermittent or continuous feeding, high power consumption, and strong adaptability to raw materials.
These characteristics make the submerged arc furnaces have unique advantages in smelting high melting point metals, alloys and chemical raw materials.
