Working Principle & Characteristics of Double-station Refining Furnace
The double-station refining furnace is a high-efficiency refining equipment used in the metallurgical industry. It is mainly used for secondary refining of molten steel (such as desulfurization, deoxidation, alloying, temperature adjustment, etc.). It realizes continuous production and improves efficiency through alternating operations of two stations.
Working Principle of Double-station Refining Furnace
1. Double-station alternating operation
- Two stations (A/B) operate independently: one station performs molten steel refining (such as heating, stirring, adding alloys), and the other station performs ladle lifting, preparation or maintenance at the same time, achieving seamless connection.
- Switching stations through rotation or translation mechanisms reduces waiting time and improves production efficiency.
2. Refining process
- Heating: Usually arc heating or chemical heating (such as aluminothermic reaction) is used to adjust the temperature of molten steel.
- Stirring: The composition is homogenized and inclusions are floated by bottom blowing inert gas (such as Ar) or electromagnetic stirring.
- Alloying: Add alloying elements to accurately adjust the composition.
- Vacuum treatment (optional): Some ladle refining furnaces are equipped with a vacuum system for degassing (such as [H], [O]).
3. Automated control
Temperature, pressure, stirring intensity and other parameters are controlled through PLC or computer system to ensure process stability.
Features of Ladle Refining Furnace
1. Efficient & continuous production
The double-station design realizes "one standby and one use", reduces non-operating time, and increases production capacity by 30%~50% compared with a single station.
2. High flexibility
The refining furnace can adapt to the refining needs of different steel grades (such as low carbon steel, stainless steel), and the process parameters (time, temperature) can be adjusted independently.
3. Energy saving & environmental protection
LRF closed operation reduces smoke emissions; heat recovery system (such as waste heat utilization of exhaust gas) reduces energy consumption.
4. Precise control
The automated system monitors the composition of molten steel (such as spectral analysis) and temperature in real time to ensure stable metallurgical quality.
5. High reliability of equipment
Key components (such as electrodes and refractory materials) are designed to be resistant to high temperatures and have a long maintenance cycle; faulty stations can be repaired separately without affecting production.
6. Adaptable to a variety of refining processes
Functions such as LF (ladle refining furnaces) and VD (vacuum refining furnaces) can be integrated to meet diverse needs.
Application Scenarios
- Iron and steel enterprises: Matching with converters/electric furnaces to produce high-purity special steels (such as bearing steel and pipeline steel).
- Casting industry: Fine-tuning of molten steel composition for high-end castings.
- Short-process steel mills: Cooperate with continuous casting machines to achieve efficient continuous casting and rolling.
The double-station refining furnace significantly improves refining efficiency and molten steel quality by optimizing production rhythm and automated control.
It is suitable for modern metallurgical enterprises with high requirements for production capacity and process stability, but its higher initial investment is more suitable for large-scale production.
