Materials Used in Steelmaking Electric Arc Furnace
The main material of the steelmaking electric arc furnace is scrap steel, which is a low-cost, easily available recycled material and an ideal choice for steel production.
Electric arc furnaces for steelmaking can be divided into alkaline method and acid method according to the different lining materials and slag-making materials, of which the alkaline method is the most commonly used.
Smelting Materials of Steelmaking Electric Arc Furnace
The main materials of steelmaking electric furnaces include: scrap steel, pig iron, direct reduced iron, graphite electrodes, lining materials and metallurgical auxiliary materials.
These materials play different roles in the process of industrial furnace steelmaking, and jointly ensure the smooth progress of the steelmaking process and the quality of steel.
Main Materials & Functions of EAF Melting Furnace:
1. Scrap steel:
As the main raw material for electric arc furnace steelmaking, it accounts for more than 70% and is the core of electric arc furnace short-process steelmaking.
2. Pig iron:
Supplement the shortage of scrap steel, adjust the composition of molten steel, and increase the carbon content in molten steel.
3. Direct reduced iron (DRI):
Direct reduced iron can be used as a substitute for scrap steel to improve the quality of molten steel and reduce the impurity content.
4. Graphite electrode:
Conductive material, which generates high temperature through arc discharge to melt scrap steel.
5. Furnace lining material:
Protect the furnace body and withstand high temperature, including magnesia bricks, magnesia carbon bricks, high alumina bricks, etc. Different materials are selected according to the furnace type and working conditions.
6. Metallurgical auxiliary materials:
Such as deoxidizers, slag-making agents, etc., used to purify molten steel, adjust the composition of molten steel, and improve the performance of steel.
Selection of Lining Materials:
- Furnace wall:
Magnesia bricks, magnesia carbon bricks, high alumina bricks, etc. are commonly used in electric arc furnaces. Among them, magnesia bricks and magnesia carbon bricks are excellent in high temperature resistance and slag resistance, especially in slag lines and hot spots.
- Furnace roof:
Generally, high alumina bricks and chrome-magnesia bricks are used. In recent years, high alumina castable prefabricated parts have also been used to improve service life and construction efficiency.
- Steel outlet:
Usually built with magnesia carbon bricks, silicon carbide bricks, etc.
- Furnace bottom:
Mostly made of magnesia sand sintering (beating) layer to ensure the integrity and durability of the bottom of the steelmaking electric furnace.
