The Process & Advantages of Smelting Pig Iron In Submerged Arc Furnace

Submerged arc furnace are mainly used to smelt pig iron, especially low-nickel pig iron.

The process of smelting pig iron in submerged arc furnaces involves the selection of furnace structure and refractory materials.

In addition to smelting pig iron, submerged arc furnaces are also used to smelt ferroalloys such as ferrosilicon.

When smelting nickel pig iron, SAF smelting furnaces is usually used to produce high-grade ferronickel for steel mills to smelt stainless steel. Raw material processing is crucial for SAF furnace smelting. For example, when smelting ferrosilicon, raw materials such as silica, semi-coke and iron oxide scale need to be ground.


Submerged Arc Furnace Smelting Pig Iron

Submerged arc furnaces can be used to smelt pig iron, especially in the production of ferroalloys. SAF smelting pig iron is mainly heated by electric energy, using the arc heat generated by the electrodes buried in the charge and the resistance heat of the charge to smelt and reduce the ore to molten iron. 

The following is the detailed process of smelting pig iron in submerged arc furnace:

1. Raw material preparation: 

Raw materials such as ore, coke or other carbonaceous reducing agents are mixed in a certain proportion, and necessary crushing and mixing are carried out.

2. Charge into the furnace: 

Add the prepared raw materials into the furnace from the top of the submerged arc smelting furnaces. 

3. Electric smelting: 

Insert the electrode into the charge, generate an arc after power is turned on, and use the arc heat and charge resistance heat to heat the charge to reduce the ore into molten iron. 

4. Slag & iron separation:

During the smelting process, molten iron and slag will be separated into layers, the molten iron sinks to the bottom of the furnace, and the slag floats on the molten iron. 

5. Iron & slag discharge: 

Regularly discharge molten iron from the bottom of the furnace and slag from the top of the furnace. 

6. Product processing: 

After further processing, the molten iron discharged from the furnace can obtain pig iron of different grades, and the slag is processed or used as needed. 


Advantages of Submerged Arc Furnace Smelting Pig Iron

  • Temperature controllable: 

The submerged arc furnaces can accurately control the smelting temperature, which is conducive to controlling product quality. 

  • Relatively low energy consumption: 

Compared with other smelting methods, SAF melting furnace can achieve lower energy consumption in some cases.

  • Wide applicability: 

The submerged arc furnace can smelt a variety of ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferronickel, etc. 

It should be noted that the process flow and parameters of the submerged arc furnace for smelting pig iron need to be adjusted according to the specific type of ferroalloy being smelted and the characteristics of the raw materials.
