What Is Ladle Refining Furnace?

Ladle refining furnace is a smelting equipment for secondary steelmaking or refining outside the furnace, which transfers molten steel to the ladle for refining.

LF furnace is mainly used for refining primary molten steel (such as molten steel from electric arc furnace, open hearth or converter). Its main functions include adjusting the temperature of molten steel, refining molten steel, and serving as a process buffer. To improve the quality of molten steel and meet the requirements of subsequent continuous casting and rolling. This equipment has a relatively simple structure and low investment.


Principle of Ladle Refining Furnace

LRF refines molten steel in a variety of ways. Its main principle is to use high-frequency induction or resistance heating of the ladle and molten steel to create a protective atmosphere.

In this environment, impurities will float to the surface of the molten steel, making it easier to remove. At the same time, the composition of the molten steel is adjusted by adding refining agents (such as silicon, aluminum, magnesium, etc.).

Some LF refining furnaces also blow in gases (such as O2, Ar, N2 mixed gases) for decarburization.

LRF combines heating, protective atmosphere and additives to control the composition of molten steel and remove impurities, thereby improving the quality of steel.


Functions of LF Furnace

  • Heating & insulation:

The ladle refining furnace raises the temperature of molten steel by arc heating and keeps it at the set temperature, which is helpful for subsequent alloying, composition adjustment and slag addition. 

  • Composition adjustment:

After the temperature of molten steel rises, alloys can be easily added to adjust the chemical composition of molten steel to the required specifications. 

  • Refining function:

Through argon blowing, stirring, vacuum degassing and other methods, LRF can remove impurities such as oxygen, sulfur, and hydrogen in molten steel to improve the purity of steel. 

  • Process buffer:

The ladle refining furnace can be used as an intermediate process to buffer the process connection between primary refining and refining, and improve production flexibility. 


In short, the LF furnace is a "magic" equipment for refining and adjusting primary molten steel. It plays a vital role in modern steel metallurgy and can effectively improve the performance and production efficiency of steel.
