How Electric Arc Furnace Works?
Electric arc furnace melt metals by harnessing the high temperatures of an electric arc.
Their operating principle is to generate an arc between electrodes and the material to be melted, creating high temperatures that melt the metal.

Electric Arc Furnace Operating Principles
1. Arc Generation:
An EAF contains two or more electrodes. When current passes through these electrodes and creates a gap between the electrodes and the charge, an arc is generated.
2. High-Temperature Heating:
The arc discharge generates extremely high temperatures, typically exceeding 3000°C, sufficient to melt a variety of metals.
3. Melting Metal:
Molten metal and slag settle at the bottom of the furnace, while the top is used for charging and adjusting the electrode position.
4. Control & Refining:
The temperature and melting process within the furnace can be controlled by adjusting the electrode height and current. Various additives can also be added to remove impurities and refine the metal.
Applications of Electric Arc Furnaces:
Metallurgy:
Industrial electric furnaces are primarily used for smelting and melting various metals, such as steel, aluminum, and copper. They can recycle scrap metal, reducing resource consumption and environmental pollution.
Waste Disposal:
The high temperatures of steelmaking electric arc furnaces can effectively decompose, burn, or convert hazardous substances, enabling waste disposal and resource recovery.
Laboratory Research:
The high temperatures of EAFs are also suitable for synthesizing new materials and studying material properties.
Compared to traditional blast furnaces, electric arc furnaces offer the following advantages:
- Flexibility: The melting process can be flexibly adjusted to meet the requirements of different metal alloys.
- Efficiency: The melting process is fast and energy consumption is relatively low.
- Environmental Protection: Scrap metal can be recycled, reducing the demand for raw materials and lowering environmental pollution.
It is important to note that industrial electric arc furnace generate smoke and exhaust gases during operation, requiring appropriate dust removal and purification equipment to ensure a safe and environmentally friendly working environment.
