What Element is Added Furing Ladle Refining to Remove Oxygen?
During ladle refining, deoxidizers are added to remove oxygen. Common deoxidizers include aluminum and silicon, aluminum, barium, and calcium.
For example, 2.6 kg of aluminum and 2.0 kg of silicon, aluminum, barium, and calcium may be added per ton of steel.
These deoxidizers react with oxygen in the molten steel in the ladle refining furnace, forming oxides that are removed from the molten steel, thereby achieving the desired deoxidation.
In addition, bottom-blown argon agitation also helps remove impurities from the molten steel.
Refining Furnace - Deoxidation in Ladle Refining
During LRF ladle refining, deoxidation is typically achieved by adding aluminum (Al) or composite deoxidizers.
These deoxidizers react with oxygen in the molten steel in the ladle furnace to form solid oxides, thereby reducing the oxygen content of the molten steel.
Common Deoxidizing Elements/Deoxidizers:
- Aluminum (Al):
This is a very effective deoxidizer. It reacts with oxygen in the molten steel to form stable aluminum oxide, which can quickly and efficiently reduce the oxygen content in the molten steel. It also forms white slag on the surface of the molten steel, protecting the steel from secondary oxidation.
Composite deoxidizers:
These deoxidizers are composed of two or more deoxidizing elements, such as aluminum, silicon, calcium, and magnesium. These composite deoxidizers typically work synergistically, achieving optimal deoxidation results for different steel grades and refining conditions.
Other Related Processes:
- Bottom-blown argon agitation:
During ladle furnaces operation, while adding deoxidizer, agitation is achieved through bottom-blown argon. This promotes full contact between the deoxidizer and the molten steel, accelerating the deoxidation reaction and helping to float the resulting oxide particles to form slag.
- Vacuum Treatment:
In the later stages of ladle refining in the LF refining furnace, vacuum treatment can further reduce the oxygen content in the molten steel. This facilitates the diffusion and escape of oxygen molecules in a vacuum environment.
