Ladle Furnaces - Purpose of Argon Purging

Ladle Furnace,Ladle Refining Furnaces

Argon purging in ladle furnaces is a crucial metallurgical process, commonly used to remove impurities from molten steel and improve its quality.

By introducing argon into the molten steel, inclusions can be lifted and dissolved gases, such as oxygen and nitrogen, can be removed.

This helps improve steel purity, reduce defects, and improve mechanical properties.

Argon purging can also help adjust the composition and temperature of the molten steel.

Specific operating parameters, such as argon flow rate and purging time, need to be adjusted according to the steel grade and process requirements. Let's learn more about its role and purpose.

Ladle Furnaces - Purpose of Argon Purging

Main Purpose

  • Providing an inert protective atmosphere: Argon is largely unreactive with molten steel at high temperatures, protecting it from oxygen and nitrogen in the air, preventing oxidation and nitridation.
  • Promoting mixing & degassing: Argon is blown from the bottom or sides of the ladle refining furnace, creating convection and micro-turbulence, which promotes uniform mixing of the molten steel and reduces the accumulation of inclusions.
  • Helps remove impurities from the melt: The injected inert gas removes some volatile and highly soluble impurities, improving the uniformity and purity of the molten steel's chemical composition.
  • Reducing the reaction rate between the molten iron & the furnace wall: Reducing direct reactions between the molten steel and the furnace lining material, extending the life of the furnace lining, and reducing the risk of recontamination.

Specific Effects

  • Reducing Oxidation & Nitriding: Inhibiting the introduction or dissolution of oxygen and nitrogen from the surface and interior of the molten steel.
  • Improving Steel Quality Stability: Homogenization and degassing reduce the number of surface defects and inclusions.
  • Improving Endpoint Composition Control: Facilitating precise control of the target chemical composition and increasing yield.

Comparison with Other Gases:

  • Oxygen purging: Used to promote oxidation removal and adjust composition, but can easily cause oxidation in the molten steel and requires strict control.
  • Nitrogen purging: Low-cost and inert, but with lower solubility and diffusivity than argon, it has a relatively weak impurity removal effect and is prone to introducing nitrogen inclusions.
