Submerged Arc Furnace For Phosphorus Production
Submerged arc furnace, also known as yellow phosphorus furnace, it's used to produce yellow phosphorus. The submerged arc method, which uses heat generated by an electric arc to react the phosphate ore with a carbon-containing reducing agent at high temperatures, extracts yellow phosphorus.
This type of submerged arc electric furnaces is crucial for producing chemical products such as industrial silicon, calcium carbide, and yellow phosphorus. It consumes significant amounts of electricity.
Principle & Process of Submerged Arc Furnace for Phosphorus Production
Working Principle
A yellow phosphorus furnace is a high-temperature electric furnace used to produce yellow phosphorus by decomposing and reducing phosphate ore, silica, and coke at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius.
This process reduces the phosphate ore to yellow phosphorus vapor, which is then discharged along with the furnace dust. The product is then cooled and rinsed, while the hot slag is discharged directly from the submerged arc furnaces.
Submerged Arc Electric Furnace Process
1. Raw Material Preparation:
Phosphate ore, silica, and coke are placed in the furnace in a specific proportion and particle size.
2. High-Temperature Reaction:
At temperatures exceeding 1000°C, the raw materials in the electric furnace undergo decomposition and reduction reactions.
3. Product Formation:
The yellow phosphorus vapor produced by the reaction is discharged from the furnace along with the furnace dust.
4. Post-Processing:
The yellow phosphorus vapor and furnace dust are cooled and rinsed to produce the yellow phosphorus product.
5. Slag Treatment:
The slag produced at high temperatures is directly discharged from the electric furnaces.

Uses of Yellow Phosphorus
Chemical Raw Material:
Yellow phosphorus is an important raw material for the production of red phosphorus, phosphoric acid, and other phosphorus compounds.
Agrochemicals:
Used in the manufacture of pesticides, rodenticides, and other products.
Fine phosphate:
It is a key raw material for the development of various fine phosphate products (such as food-grade, feed-grade, and electronic-grade phosphate).
The submerged arc furnace for phosphorus producrtion can also be used to produce other ferroalloys and chemical raw materials, such as ferrosilicon, ferrochrome, and calcium carbide.
