Application of Ultra-high Power Electric Arc Furnaces

Ultra-high Power Electric Arc Furnaces,EAF

Ultra-high power electric arc furnaces (UHFAs) are primarily used for heating and melting scrap steel, utilizing the high energy density generated by an electric arc to accomplish this process.

These melting furnaces are characterized by short smelting times, automation through computer control, optimized metallurgical processes, and the collection of production data.

This technology originated in the mid-1960s, aiming to achieve higher power input while reducing refractory material consumption by altering the characteristics of the electric arc.

The application of steelmaking electric furnaces benefits from their rapid melting capabilities and efficient production control.

Applications of Ultra-High Power Electric Arc Furnaces

What is an Ultra-High Power Electric Arc Furnace?

First, we need to understand its definition. The power level of an EAF is usually measured in "transformer capacity per ton of steel (kVA/t)".

  • Ordinary power electric arc furnace: Approximately 300 kVA/t
  • High power electric furnace: Approximately 400-500 kVA/t
  • Ultra-high power electric furnace: Typically refers to >700 kVA/t, and modern advanced UHP EAF can even reach over 900-1000 kVA/t.

The core idea of "ultra-high power" electric arc furnaces is to melt raw materials such as scrap steel in a very short time by inputting extremely high electrical energy, thereby achieving extremely high production efficiency.

Main Applications of Ultra-High Power Electric Arc Furnaces

  • 1. Short-Process Steelmaking (Electric Arc Furnace Short-Process)

This is the most important and core application area. Unlike the "long process" which uses iron ore as raw material and a blast furnace-converter system, the short process uses scrap steel as the main raw material, producing molten steel by melting the scrap steel in an electric arc furnace.

Application Scenarios:

Special steel production plants, mini steel mills, and green steel enterprises that focus on recycling scrap steel.

  • 2. Smelting of Alloy Steel & Special Steels

The furnace atmosphere and temperature of steelmaking electric arc furnace easy to control, making them ideal for smelting steel grades with special requirements for composition and performance, such as stainless steel, tool steel, bearing steel, and high-speed steel. Ultra-high power significantly improves the production efficiency of these high-value-added steel grades.

  • 3. Matching with Continuous Casting & Rolling Processes

Modern steel production is continuous. The rapid melting capacity of ultra-high power EAF (UHFAs) allows them to match the production rhythm of subsequent continuous casting and rolling mills, forming a compact, efficient, and continuous production line of "electric arc furnace - ladle refining - continuous casting - continuous rolling."

The application of ultra-high power electric arc furnaces is a key pillar in the steel industry's transformation towards high efficiency, energy conservation, and environmental protection. It makes short-process steelmaking, centered on scrap steel recycling, possible and economically feasible, greatly promoting the recycling of steel materials and aligning with global sustainable development strategies.

With the advancement of "dual carbon" goals, UHFAs, as core equipment in green metallurgy, will have even broader application prospects.
